Own a Piece of Rock History. Maybe? Ebay Find of the Month.

metallica3.jpg

Imagine driving Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett’s Porsche 911 C4 jamming to Metallica on the stereo he paid $20,000 for back in 1990. Kirk’s car stereo was featured in one of the Car and Driver type magazines (I’ve not been able to track down the exact details and Kirk just doesn’t remember.) This collectors dream is a direct descendent of the awe inspiring 959 SUPER CAR…….  At least that is what the beginning paragraph of the ebay ad says.

With a starting bid of $35,000 and a buy it now price just shy of $40k, I’m not sure that the Metallica provenance will justify the Turbo price premium (you could easily buy an ’89 930 Turbo in that price range, not to mention a decent 993 or mid mileage 996) but you never know??  The car is listed as being sold for Tony Smith (Metallica’s former tour manager). There is some documentation with the car and that $20k spent on the stereo in 1990 could easily still be worth $20 or $30 in today’s market.  You’ll have to decide for yourself.

    A 1990 20k stereo isnt worth squat today, much like a Mettalica recording. The Metallica provenance may have had some value in 1990, but I doubt it, the average mulleted Metallica fan has no interest in Porsche. I think the band lost all “street cred” when they legally attacked internet downloaders. They sang “turn the page” and many did just that.

    @glen,

    You’re digging through the old posts. :-) I agree about celebrity provenance. I think the only cars that might bring a few extra bucks would be those owned by James Dean, Steve McQueen, and other Porsche legends (Hurley Haywood, etc.).

    Jerry Seinfeld’s cars are still bringing a bit of a premium but that’s mostly due to the fact that they are very original, low mileage cars!!!

    [...] In the very short time that 993C4S.com has been online the traffic and visits from people within the Porsche community, as well as other car aficionados, has grown tremendously. As a result, for the next week, I will be spending a considerable amount of time changing the look and feel of the site. The reason for this is I want to make my content more accessible to you the reader. In addition, I will change my posting schedule (from a daily post Monday through Friday) to a posting schedule of two to three posts per week. The idea is to allow for more in-depth and researched posts that provide even more valuable and useful information (that’s not to say I won’t still post great Ebay finds like the most recent Metallica Porsche).
