Is it a Porsche? Strosek? Ferrari? Porschari!!!

strosek-replica-porsche-frontWe’ve been a bit lax with our eBay finds of the month lately, but that’s only because we don’t want to bore you with just any old car or Porsche related item. It takes something special to make our list! Take this month’s example for instance. What’s with the decal on the front fender? Is it a Porsche? Is it a tuned version by Strosek? Or, could it possibly be the ultra rare Porschari?

Advertised as a 1996 Strosek Replica (I’m not a huge fan of Strosek, but I think even they may consider this an insult), this 1977 Porsche is for sale on eBay with a Buy it Now price of $19,500.

According to the seller’s description the car looks much better in person than it does in the photos. All we have to say, is let’s hope so!!

1977 Porsche Strosek Replica

Even more surprising then the sellers description (or that someone would even build something like this) is the fact that someone (at least four people as we write this) has already placed a bid for this car. It just goes to show there truly is a garage for every car. As always (and maybe even more so in this case) regardless of what type of Porsche you’re buying, or where you might be buying it from, a Pre Purchase Inspection is a must!

I feel the sick mind behind this bastardized monstrosity may be more interesting than his creation. One question comes to mind ,why?

  2. 993C4S on October 13th, 2008 11:00 am

Our thoughts exactly. One thing that has us perplexed is the emblem on the fender. It’s not a Ferrari emblem (the horse is prancing in the wrong direction) and it’s obviously not a Porsche badge either. Anyone have any idea????

  3. Andrew Granieri on October 13th, 2008 11:00 am

The seller of this item would like to thank you with broken english and a severely disjointed perception of reality for the free advertising. This car looks awful. Whoever buys this should undo the damage…

  4. marque911 on October 13th, 2008 11:27 am

This poor car has something of an identity crisis. It’s listed as both a 1977 & a 1996 model, but has a late model VIN. It also has both an automatic & a manual transmission. The lucky highest bidder is going to get a unique vehicle. Doncha just love ebay?

  5. 993C4S on October 13th, 2008 1:11 pm

@Andrew. IMHO, whoever buys this is nuts.

    @Marque911, eBay= 2nd only to craigslist.. :-)

I hate to say it, I have seen much, much worse for much more money.

I don’t condone it, but at least it still looks like a Porsche and seems to be put together right. Some good parts, Recaro sport seats, exhuast, etc.

Heck, I don’t like all the RS reps running around, I’m a stock guy. Give it to me the way Porsche made it.

  7. Dave on July 24th, 2009 10:59 am

I just purchased this car and its a 1977 Porsche 911s with a manual 5 speed, Strosek body kit, Strosek interior and upgraded Koni suspension. I am currently rebuilding this car, I repainted it already with the original Guards red that is on the car in this picture, it is not Ferrari red and the fender sticker says Stuttgart, which is a town in Germany (for you that are quick to speak and slow to think first) If you look at any Porsche badge you will see a horse in the middle and the name Stuttgart in the lower right corner, just as it is on he sticker of this car. duh If you people dont like the looks of this car put the picture next to an original 1977 Porsche 911s. If you like any of the high end flared fender Porsches you will love the looks of this body style because it doesn’t have the God awful Herbie head lights. If you dont know what your talking about you really shouldn’t say anything

  8. marque911 on July 24th, 2009 11:17 am

Hey Mr Buyer! Settle petal. I take it you are rebuilding the car and retaining the body kit? Fair enough. I quite like Strosek body kits, far better than some of the other 80’s abominations. But have another look at the Porsche crest. The word Stuttgart is above the horse. There is no lower right hand corner. Less vitriol, more facts next time.

  9. 993C4S on July 24th, 2009 11:24 am

    @Dave,

Let me jump in before everyone else and say congratulations on your purchase. Whatever it may be, it’s still a Porsche of sorts.

As I mentioned in my post, I’m not a fan of the Strosek kits, but that’s just my opinion. On the other hand, I would never disparage the iconic design of early 911s by saying they have “Herbie head lights”. To me that’s almost blasphemous. But hey, you’re entitled to your opinion.

With regard to the Porsche crest, I second @marque911’s comments above and would also point out that while the Porsche crest does indeed have a prancing horse of Stuttgart, the horse points to the left (as it does on the Stuttgart coat of arms it was copied from). So, whatever that yellow thing is on the fender it is not something that was ever intended or designed for a Porsche.

Enjoy your purchase, good luck with the rebuild and watch out as I’m pretty sure we’ll be hearing from Andrew G quite soon with some serious vitriol (love that word).

  10. Dave on July 27th, 2009 9:57 am

marque911 and 993c4s you people shame yourself, I just filled you in on all the facts that you and your nim wit buddies were seriously babbling about in your posts which clearly shows your ignorance on the topics and you focus in on the “lower right hand corner”? I wrote that so you would actually take a look at the Porsche badge before you opened up your misguided opinion process again. The internet is supposed to be used to build your knowledge base; it was never intended to be filled with bologna opinions and false information as your passed posts prove. Get with the program and buck up. As far as being blasphemous 993cs4, if Porsche is your god than enjoy your eternity in hell.

  11. 993C4S on July 27th, 2009 10:13 am

    @Dave,

Seems like you have a bit of a chip on your shoulder??

1st. I congratulated you on your purchase.

2nd. I simply corrected your statement that said

“If you look at any Porsche badge you will see a horse in the middle and the name Stuttgart in the lower right corner”.

This simply isn’t true. Maybe your misspoke, or maybe you were trying to say something else. Either way, your comment is incorrect as Marque911 was quick to point out. As for looking at a Porsche badge, I’m typing this from my garage, where there is a nice selection of them to look at. Don’t see one that looks anything like yours.

3rd. I believe I also told you to enjoy your purchase and wished you success with the rebuild.

So, I’m not sure what you are so uptight about. Maybe you’re starting to regret the purchase???

As for me going to hell… :-) What ever let’s you sleep better at night. Pretty strong words for a post about a Porsche.

  12. marque911 on July 27th, 2009 11:52 am

Well this is getting odd. i just re-read your description of the Porsche crest and its alleged “lower right hand corner.” I was beginning to think I’d dreamt it. I’ve been a member of the Porsche Club here in Sydney Australia since 1974 so I feel I’ve been around these cars long enough to know just a smidgen about them. I’m such an enthusiast that I’m off to Monterey AGAIN next week for the Laguna Seca historics and all the associated festivities. So pardon me for knowing the shape of the Porsche crest but the situation remains : You’re Wrong! Live with it. And don’t insult me by saying that I shame myself by babbling on. Your ‘facts’ are fiction. Buy a Porsche book and look at all the pretty pictures and learn some history. Facts, please. Facts. Gee, you must really be a delight to wake up next to each morning.

  13. Dave on July 27th, 2009 1:47 pm

Well guys I found this post and read what was being posted and I was rather lets say disenchanted by the lack of Porsche knowledge and feeble opinions being expressed. All of your posts neglect the fact that this is an original Porsche with a beautiful Strosek package. Did you know this car took first place at the Indianapolis car show 6 years ago? I’ll bet none of you with your Porsches can say that. And yes it had the yellow decal of a Porsche badge that none of you knew was a representation of the Porsche badge because your intellect must have temporarily blinded you of which you cannot admit to until after reading my post. You post the horse is “prancing” when it is fact reared up. You liken the horse to a Ferrari because you like to laugh and make fun of yourselves with your ignorance of the Porsche badge and the emblem on this car that represents it which was inspired from Porsche for Porsche. So own up to it guys, the alarm clock is going off, you were all in the dark before I started posting.

  14. 993C4S on July 27th, 2009 2:15 pm

Dave, I never can tell if people are serious in their comments or just like trying to get a rise out of others. In your case, I’m truly hoping you’re trying to provoke people because the alternative is simply frightening.

Normally I don’t get involved in these type of discussion with my readers, but in this case I think I’ll make an exception.

    1. you wrote: “All of your posts neglect the fact that this is an original Porsche with a beautiful Strosek package”

I beg to differ. I specifically said this was a 1977 Porsche with a Strosek body kit in my original post above (and that was being generous after the original ebay Post identified it as both a ‘77 and a ‘96). I also provided a link to the auction so people could judge for themselves. Knowing now that you bought the car, I’m thinking maybe I should ask the seller for a commission?

As for this car being “beautiful”. Well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If you think it looks good, that’s all that matters. I for one don’t like Strosek body kits, but that’s just me. Others have commented above saying they do like them. To each their own.

    2. you wrote: “And yes it had the yellow decal of a Porsche badge that none of you knew was a representation of the Porsche badge because your intellect must have temporarily blinded you of which you cannot admit to until after reading my post.

Dave, if this is a Porsche badge, I’ve never seen it before. That’s not saying it might not be, but I would love to see another factory built Porsche with this badge on it. There is only one Porsche badge that I’m aware of and it is derived from the Stuttgart coat of arms which pictures a horse and other treatments.

    3. you wrote, “You post the horse is “prancing” when it is fact reared up”"

“prancing”?, “reared up”? who cares? This may be a “representation” of a Porsche badge, but I don’t believe it is one designed by Porsche.

    4. No one has likened the horse to a Ferrari, in fact, I made it a point to say it couldn’t be a Ferrari badge based on the direction the horse is pointing (same with a Porsche badge).

    5. If I were in the dark, and you sir, were the only form of light, I prefer to remain with the lights off.

Enjoy your car and thanks for helping to increase my page-views today!!!

  15. Dave on July 27th, 2009 2:28 pm

man 993C4s you got issues, the box says speak your mind, not try and justify your criticisms after you’ve been called out. I didnt buy the car in any auction – ebay or any internet site. The previous owner lives in Canada, feel free to call him. I’m sure he would love to talk about the badge with you also. Good Luck

  16. 993C4S on July 27th, 2009 2:33 pm

    Dave,

Thought I would give you the benefit of the doubt. I was wrong, it is the alternative and very, very frightening.

As for calling the PO. Sure, post his phone number.

  17. Andrew on July 27th, 2009 3:53 pm

Dave, are you a middle manager or a troll? You have all the symptoms of both: nitpicking and pointing out “problems” with individuals without offering any sound reasoning or answers to their questions! I love it. And I’d love to talk to the PO — and congratulations on the car. If you are truly taking it back to a more original look, I have every confidence you’ll finally be able to tell the difference between a Ferrari badge and a Porsche one, by the time you’re done. This is assuming you yourself don’t succumb to this — what was it again — “intellect-induced temporary blindness”? That’s great! It really is! Good luck with whatever changes you wish to make to the car! As it stands (especially with the “Porsche” logo on the sides), that poor 911 with a body kit over a stock engine is the Stuttgart equivalent to a riced out Honda Civic — everyone here implores you to set this car right!

You are a unique niche market — some Porsche owners only settle for the rear engined flagship, some won’t drive anything that has antifreeze in the engine, some just refuse to put more than 10 miles on their car each year. You are far less discriminating! I applaud it! “Just give me a Porsche — any kind will do, I just want its logo to be an animal in some sort of polygon!”

You are well on your way, but you would do well to realize you can be as big and as bad as you want on the Internet, but don’t call people names when they call you out on this stuff. Especially 993C4S. You seem to think you know everything about the marque but to be brutally honest your words convey none of this. In fact, I think you could spend a day posting on here and explaining to us everything you know regarding Porsche — and 993C4S could spend an hour on the john and he would have more Porsche related material than you.

But hey! I’m probably half your age, so by your calculations, I probably know half the Porsche stuff you do! I suppose I can only take comfort in the fact that 1/2 * 0 is still zero.

Best of luck with the car! :-D

  18. CinVinMan on July 27th, 2009 5:44 pm

Hey, you “nim wits” go take your “bologna opinions” and put them in some “passed post”, willya?

+1 on the Rew-minator’s comments. John, I’m amazed you were able to hold yourself back as long as you did.

  19. marque911 on July 27th, 2009 10:10 pm

Hey Dave, I’m really enjoying all this, you are nothing if not ignorant, pig-headed & uninformed. But certainly entertaining. Read this, hope you don’t find these facts too disturbing. “The famous symbol of Ferrari is a black prancing horse on yellow background, usually with the letters S F for Scuderia Ferrari.
The horse was originally the symbol of Count Francesco Baracca, a legendary “asso” (ace) of the Italian air force during World War I, who painted it on the fuselage of his planes. Baracca died very young on June 19, 1918, shot down on Mount Montello after 34 victorious duels and many team victories. He was the Italian ace of aces and he soon became a national hero.
Baracca had wanted the prancing horse on his planes because his squad, the “Battaglione Aviatori”, was enrolled in a Cavalry regiment (air forces were at their first years of life and had no separate administration), and also because he himself was reputed to be the best cavaliere of his team. The Scuderia Ferrari logo Coat of Arms of the City of StuttgartIt has been supposed that the choice of a horse was perhaps partly due to the fact that his noble family was known for having plenty of horses in their estates at Lugo di Romagna. Another theory suggests Baracca copied the rampant horse design from a shot down German pilot having the emblem of the city of Stuttgart on his plane. Interestingly, German sports car manufacturer Porsche, from Stuttgart, borrowed its prancing horse logo from the city’s emblem. Furthermore astonishing: Stuttgart is an over the centuries modified version of Stutengarten (an ancient german word for “Gestüt”, translated into english as mare garden or stud farm, into italian as “scuderia”).”

    Your serve.

  20. Steve Shirk on July 28th, 2009 5:40 pm

I don’t understand the bickering. If you like it or don’t, what’s the difference? The car has one owner, he likes it. We visit Porsche sites because we like Porschas. The car is a Porsche. I paid 12k for an all original 911 that was falling apart a few years ago. Who made the better buy? Probably the Strosek clone, the 77, the 96, with or without the yellow badge. If I ever get my Weissach edition in that good of shape, I may be able to get 19k for it, but I doubt it. Nice car no matter what. Any Porsche is a nice car IMHO.

  21. 993C4S on July 28th, 2009 6:06 pm

Steve, I think the bickering stems from the current owners own comments. I believe he was originally congratulated on his purchase and warmly welcomed, at least by me. I think if you read my comments above, you will see I echoed your sentiment about the only thing mattering is that the new owner was/is happy with his purchase.

It wasn’t until he wished me an eternity in hell that things started to really go downhill for good :-)

  22. Andrew on July 28th, 2009 6:28 pm

Steve, a Porsche is a fine car, you are indeed correct. I think if this page was on a national geographic special, the narration would have gone something like this:

“Here, we observe the troll in its natural/virtual habitat. Its senseless prowling and calling is its display of prowess, both intellectual and (some argue it believes to be) sexual in nature. The troll uses these displays to lure a quick meal. Known for embodying the spirit of ‘biting off more than one can chew’, the troll may attract multiple targets within a short period of time, even in the face of almost certain defeat. We would do well to simply sit back and observe this creature, lest it senselessly lash out for encroaching on its territory. Please refrain from feeding trolls. If you see a troll, you should simply move on.”

    etc etc etc.

  23. Charlie Lesne on December 12th, 2009 9:55 pm

    I’m a 356 owner… but I think the car is beautiful…

  24. 993C4S on December 13th, 2009 3:40 pm

    @Charlie,

You’re not alone. A number of people like the original Strosek Porsches, I just don’t happen to be one of them. :-)

  25. marque911 on January 30th, 2010 3:38 am

Any updates on this poor 911 and its deluded owner? I so enjoyed our sparring, I miss it.
