While others have done excellent work using Legos to recreate the shape of Porsche (Arvo Brothers), this is the first time we’ve seen someone able to create look alikes of famous Porsche racing liveries.

Photos of Lego Porsche Liveries
<a This is just plain cool.

“Don’t take it down to your studio, and don’t get paint on it.” That’s what Ian Cook was told one Christmas morning after unwrapping a gift of a radio controlled car. Fortunately for us, Ian didn’t listen. Four years since this Christmas “lightbulb moment” Cook, a trained artist, is still going strong creating artwork the size of three story buidings, using both real cars and RC cars as brushes and traveling the globe to showcase his talents.

After seeing some of Ian’s work ourselves, we caught up with him to ask a few questions regarding his RC collection, methods and Porsche related artwork.

PP: Hey, Ian. Thanks for taking the time to speak with us. We’re pretty big RC fans ourselves. Exactly how many RC cars do you have in your collection?

IC: I have many RC cars in my collection of paintbrushes, I’ve lost count of exactly how many I have. I buy them as I go along, and can be out and buy new brushes when I visit toy shops! Christmas and January is the best time to buy, as so many of the shops stock a range of RC cars over the festive season.

I’m very fussy about which cars I buy, if I am doing a project for a manufacturer I will buy specific branded cars for that event. This has included Jaguar, Land Rover, Ford and Ferrari.

I would probably say I have purchased well-over 300 RC since I first started painting with RC cars.

PP: How do you choose cars to paint with?

IC: Cars are chosen for a number of reasons, generally on their size and what brand they are. However it is like an artist choosing a brush to paint with. [Certain] cars have different wheelbases, power, turning circles, wheels width, height, speed and traction. Over the last three years I have been able to find out which cars react in the best way to the paint.

All these ‘brushes’ are different, and for a show I will generally take between 25 – 40 cars with me to create and paint with.

PP: Do you have any Porsche images you could share with us? What about the RC cars themselves? Any Porsche versions?

IC: Over the past 3 years I have created a number of Porsche artworks, this has included a number of classic and iconic Porsche’s. The 917 Gulf Le Mans and the Martini 911 RSR (see above) have been created. I would like to create more Porsche’s, particularly modern/contemporary ones like the 911 GT3 RS in Green – it would be a great looking artwork!

In terms of paintbrushes, I have a couple of Porsche’s 911 RS’s that I have used previously, they are quite powerful, but great cars to move the paint quickly over the canvas – I have two that have now retired from paint duties.

A Short Video Showing how Ian Creates His Artwork

While I would love to see a video that’s Porsche related, the time lapse below gives you a brief but fun glimpse into the process Ian uses for creating his art.

If you would like to see more of his work or commission him for your very own painting, check out Ian’s web-site at Popbang Colour.

Related Porsche Posts
Review of the Tamyia Porsche 911 VIP GT3 Cup RC Car
Schoco Porche 356 RC Car
Radio Controlled Lego Porsche

3 Ways to Make a Porsche Out of Paper

Porsche Artwork

artwork

origami

paper

Porsche

When I first saw these paper Porsches I was immediately reminded of elementary school art class. You can download the templates for the paper Porsches pictured above on this site. While the instructions are in Japanese, there are fairly detailed pictures showing each step. All you’ll need are some safety scissors and a lot of time and patience (remember, there are two templates required for each paper Porsche).

If you’re looking for something a bit more simple, you might want to try your hand at the template below.

This paper Porsche above is only one piece (where as the red and blue 911s are modular). You can download the template at PaperToys.com

A Book on Folding Paper Porsches

Lastly, if you really think this might be your next hobby, a quick search of Amazon found what appears to be an interesting book with detailed templates on a number of classic sports cars , including a Porsche 911. While we haven’t tried the book ourselves, at less than $10 it might be worth a shot.

If you decide to build any of these paper Porsches send us a picture. We’ll send a PorschePurist.com T-shirt to the first three (3) people who send us pictures of their Porsche Origami (don’t worry, we’ll understand if nobody sends us a pic. I know, very selfish, but I don’t really blame him.

Recently, we were contacted by Wilco who was eager to let us know that he had finished yet another Porsche diorama and wanted to share it with others. As we had already acquired one for ourselves (Wilco is not a sponsor of this site and we paid a fair price for our Diorama), it was without any hesitation (this time) that we wanted to share this with you.

Of particular interest in this creation is the almost 2″ x 2″ LCD screen attached to the shop wall that displays images of various Porsche models and other images. Like all Wilco’s work, most can be had for a price. This particular Porsche diorama can be yours for €800 plus shipping. Please contact him directly if you’re interested in purchasing this example or commissioning him for a replica of your own garage.

The pictures above are for your viewing pleasure (if you’re reading this post via email you may need to click through to the site if the images aren’t visible).

Shipping a miniature Porsche garage

When John purchased his Porsche diorama, Wilco recommended that we fly him over in order to hand carry it given the delicate nature of his work. As it was a stretch for us to afford the diorama we opted to have it shipped instead. Wilco was kind enough to create a special packing box that protected it in its travels. However, even this extra attention to detail couldn’t protect it from the rough and rugged handling of our UPS driver. While the diorama wasn’t damaged heavily, it did take a few hours (and a lot of super glue) to put things back in proper order.

Related Porsche Posts
Porsche Automotive Diorama
Lego Porsche 911
Scale Model Porsche 934 by Tamiya
A Porsche Engine Designed and Manufactured in Japan

Can Art Show How a Porsche Feels, Rather Than Simply How it Looks?

Porsche Artwork

stephane dufour

James May (of Top Gear fame) recently asked a very similar question in an article published in The Telegraph. He goes on to say, “Love comes in at the eye, according to WB Yeats, but the meaning of a 911 comes through the buttocks and some demons lurking in a dark corner of the mind. Cezanne revealed the world to us through a bowl of apples. Monet did it with the front of a cathedral. Lucian Freud did it with that tubby woman lying on the sofa… Someone must be able to do it with an old Porsche.”

Porsche 718

I think I’ve found that someone in the form of Automotive Artist Stéphane Dufour* (a new sponsor of PorschePurist). According to Stéphane’s bio, he spent most of his childhood contemplating the fine automobile craftsmanship passing through his father’s workshop. His father repaired and serviced prestigious cars, authentic masterpieces which stimulated Stéphane’s imagination and would deeply influence this young boy’s day to day life. While many memorable marques passed through the doors of his father’ shop, it’s evident, by the sheer volume of work, that Porsche is his strongest passion and most prevalent muse.

Le Mans 70

I asked Stéphane to describe how he decides the autos that are to become the focus of his work, what provides his inspiration? He responded with, “My inspiration comes at any time, for any car. It can be a Porsche 911 or an Aston Martin. It can be a vintage or modern car. Most of time, it is a car that has history (race cars for example). I love the 917. This car is for me a very big source of inspiration.” You can see this inspiration first hand in Dufour’s work with such notable 917s as Martini 21, the Pink Pig and Martini N°3.

Dufour’s bio goes on to describe his work as “hyperrealistic”. I simply say it’s excellent! Apparently, I’m not alone in my assessment as Stéphane sells between 300 and 400 limited editions annually along with more than 250 original pieces.

Are you familiar with the saying, “Don’t tell me your funny, make me laugh.“? Well, I’m not an art critic, so rather than trying to tell you about Stéphane’s unique and innovative style that combines synthesizing space, light and shape with movement and color, I would rather you simply see for yourself. The presentation below is but a small sample of Stéphane’s work. His limited editions, in runs of 200 to 300 (depending on the piece), are ridiculously affordable, ranging in price from $68.00 to $180 and can be purchased in the US from his California based distributor. For those of you with a bigger artistic appetite, and the budget to match, his original works – those few that are left – are available for sale though Stéphane’s web-site.

Stéphane is but one of only a handful of artists whose work is officially licensed from Porsche A.G. Besides his original works and limited edition prints, Dufour works on custom commissions by individuals and companies alike. Offering up as evidence of his true love for his craft, Stéphane says it is, “an authentic source of joy for anyone who understands that art and automobiles are two intertwining and intimate domains…”

A Chocolate Covered Porsche (also known as Willy Wonka Wants to Know Why?)
Lego Porsche 911
This is Not Art!
