As a Porsche fan, its been a bit frustrating over the last few years waiting for my favorite marque to get with the program and join the revolution, the social networking revolution that is. At times, it seems as if Porsche corporate moves at one of two speeds, slow or glacial. However, over the past few months something or someone has awakened the sleeping giant and they have actively and openly embraced the many outlets available on-line with which they can promote themselves. The latest endeavor, Porsche TV.

As part of the Porsche Channel on YouTube, the Official Porsche TV series takes various cars of today and yesterday and showcases their strengths both on and off the track. There are quite a few models to choose from and there should be something for everyone. My choice for today:

While this first video starts off a little slow, it does have it all; a compilation of all the other videos below. So, if you watch just one, this is it. However, I would highly recommend you take a look at each of them. Even though some of the footage repeats from video to video it is minimal and there are some amazing cars and shots included in each one.

Monterey Video Compilation

About 50 seconds in, make sure you have the volume turned up and then get ready; Included is footage of the historic races, some of Porsche’s most famous and important race cars, interviews with Michael Mauer (designer of the Panamera), thoughts from Klaus Bishoff (head of Porsche’s rolling museum) and Porsches at Pebble Beach.

My favorite quote from the video, “To drive an RS 60 Spyder is a very good feeling. If you drive a 550 Spyder you’ll feel a little bit like James Dean but with the RS 60 it was a real race car and it make you happy!”

Porsche on Porsche Violence

It simply isn’t safe to drive a Cayenne in the streets of Russia anymore! You obviously can’t trust the criminals; you’ve lost what little faith you had in your own police; now, you can’t even trust other Porsche drivers. The video below might take a second to start up, but stay with it.

Almost as interesting as the subject of the video are the number of other luxury cars driving by the scene of the accident. Other Porsches, Mercedes, BMWs, Jaguars, Hummers, etc. etc. Capitalism is alive in well in this former Eastern Bloc States.

Russian SWAT Team Attacks the Wrong Porsche Cayenne

It was not a good day to own a black Porsche Cayenne in Russia this week. Imagine for a moment that you had the good fortune to overcome the odds, make a few Rubles and enjoy a slice of the good life by purchasing your very own Porsche Cayenne. Now imagine you’re sitting in traffic, minding your own business, when your world is suddenly turned upside down. BOOM, a “flash-bang” grenade explodes in your lap, you’re yanked from behind the wheel and on the ground before you even know what’s happening. Russian SWAT teams are that efficient. Unfortunately, they aren’t that good at telling one Cayenne or plate from another. That’s right, it’s the wrong car!!!! See the video after the back-story.

Here’s the back story according to a post on thatsjustnotright.com.

“The Russian SWAT team is called out after a robbery in Moscow in which one person was sadly shot dead and another injured. The robbers escaped before the team arrived, but reports came in saying they where driving down Lenin Ave in a Porsche Cayenne with the number plate 177-177. The SWAT team raced to a junction on Lenin Avenue and waited.

They see the Porsche, attack it, break the windows, throw light grenades inside the car but then notice that instead of the gang of Southerners there are only two Slavic dudes………. which, as they explained later, were going into downtown Moscow for lunch!

While police were processing those first guys they get a message by radio that another black Cayenne with 177 plates has passed by. As you see the second one was correct. They had the same numbers on the plates but different letters.

So the second Porsche is hit, and right guys get caught……… but seriously worked over for the inconvenience they caused.

As an after note, the first innocent guys had the car repaired and given a sincere apology. Sadly, prior to this, someone had been shot dead by the gang in the second Cayenne, but bejayus, imagine going out for lunch and that happened to you.”

Seriously, I know that Porsche has sold more than 250,000 Cayennes, but two (2) black ones, in Moscow, on the same street, with similar license plates…. If I were the guy in the first Cayenne I’d be thanking my lucky stars and buying a lotto ticket. He’s gotta be due for some good luck!!!

Gymkhana Takes AutoCrossing to a Whole new Level

If you’re a Porsche owner and a member of the PCA, or any type of Driving enthusiast, then you’re probably familiar with the autocross as a driving event. Gymkhana (pronounced Jim-Kah_Nah) is basically AutoCrossing on steroids. Watch this video below and you’ll see what I mean. Words really can’t do justice to this type of driving.

The best definition for Gymkhana comes from the video you just watched and reads as follows:

An automotive sport that takes place on an open field or parking lot and requires driver to skillfully maneuver their cars around a series of cones, slalom, 180 degree turns, 360 degree turns, figure eight turns or other obstacles using extreme acceleration, braking and drifting.

Similar to “autocross”, Gymkhana course are often very complex and memorizing the course is a significant part of achieving a fast line

Is anyone doing this type of event with their Porsche? I think we should add it to the events roster in the PCA!! Anyone have any video of this type of “on the edge of control” driving? I would love to see it. Post up your links.

Vintage Porsche Commercial

I spend a good amount of time each week on-line researching articles, looking for content, etc. Occasionally, I find some really good stuff that I just can’t wait to share. I’m sure most of you are familiar with the most recent Porsche commercial for the Cayenne GTS. The concept of the commercial is based on the idea of Porsche bloodlines and how no matter what type of Porsche you are driving, it’s still a Porsche. While I agree with the concept and I even like the commercial, it simply doesn’t compare to some of the older, vintage Porsche commercials.

In my search, I’ve come across a treasure trove of old Porsche commercials. The one below is my favorite as it quotes Professor Dr. Ferdinand Porsche directly and as it relates to Porsche, I don’t think truer words could be spoken:

For something to endure it must be unique yet so universal anyone can appreciate it. Timeless Design is wasted if it can’t survive. This is why we race and test our cars so hard. Creating something that time can not erode, something that ignores time both physically and in concept. This is the ultimate victory.

We spend a good portion of our days here at 993C4S.com surfing the web and looking for Porsche related subjects and ideas. As a result, we have a fairly intricate system of automated alerts that let us know when there is something new going on in the world of Porsche.

New Porsche Video

So, last week when an alert popped up announcing a new Porsche video was available on YouTube we went looking with our usual anticipation. While the video in question wasn’t new, it is none the less one of our all time favorites and we were happy to be reminded of it. If you’ve never heard of Getaway in Stockholm, then the video below should provide a great introduction for you. This production company creates videos based on the premise of outrunning the police through the early morning streets of Stockholm Sweden. We present it here in its entirety for your viewing pleasure.

Consider these few things before you watch Porsche Getaway in Stockholm:

There is a small bit of adult language/music at the very beginning of the video for those of you with sensitive ears. Fortunately it ends about 45 seconds in and that’s when things start to get interesting.
The production quality on this video and the sound is amazing. It’s like watching a video game. It actually made my heart race.
There is considerable controversy over this video and others like it as to its authenticity. I’ve provided a link to a thread on Rennlist (from a year or two ago) regarding this subject.
The video is long, but well worth watching in its entirety. Pretty amazing driving.

Is it Real?

Obviously the car is set-up with an intricate camera system to capture multiple angles that can then be edited after the fact. There are more videos available on the Getaway in Stockholm web-site. Some of them look a lot more convincing then this one. What did you think? Is it real? Let us know and let me know of other great videos we should be looking at.
