Porsche 993 in the Snow

It’s snowed like crazy in the North East on Monday and that got me to thinking about the 993 in the snow and how it would handle. I’m told by some friends (who drive their cars in the New England Winter weather) that with snow tires it’s no problem at all and the Carrera 4 or C4S handles better than most SUVs.

Anyway, I decided to do a quick search to see if I could find any pictures or videos of 993s driving in the snow. I didn’t find what I was looking for, but I did find the video posted above. What does it have to do with a 993 in the snow? Absolutely nothing other than I’m sure you can get any model of a 993 to drift like the one featured above by just adding a little winter weather.

I’m sure that by now most of you have seen that Hankook Tires built a “drift” car from a 993 (producing 600hp). The video above was shot in New Jersey last September. It shows the Hankook car going against a Nissan 350Z. Unfortunately, it looks like the Porsche got a bad start. However, even with that, at the very end it looks like pure power is going to kick in for the win just as the race ends.

I was pretty surprised to see a rear-engined car as a drift car. I understand that due to the extra weight on the back axle, they had to modify the suspension significantly in order to allow it to “drift”.

Any of you have interest in this type of competition? I wonder if the PCA would ever consider drifting events. :-)
